Fundamentals

What is Space Engineering?

Space engineering encompasses the design, analysis, and operation of spacecraft and launch vehicles. It integrates orbital mechanics, propulsion, structures, thermal control, communications, and guidance โ€” all under the extreme constraints of the space environment: vacuum, radiation, microgravity, and vast distances.

Key Research Papers

Tsiolkovsky (1903): Rocket Equation

Derived the fundamental equation of rocketry: delta-v = ve * ln(m0/mf). Proved spaceflight was physically possible. The foundation of all astronautics.

Konstantin Tsiolkovsky | Russia

Hohmann (1925): The Attainability of Heavenly Bodies

Proposed the minimum-energy transfer orbit between two circular orbits (Hohmann transfer). Still the most fuel-efficient two-impulse maneuver.

Walter Hohmann | NASA translation

Parkinson & Spilker (1996): GPS Overview

Comprehensive overview of the Global Positioning System. Satellite constellation design, signal structure, navigation algorithms, error sources.

GPS: Theory & Applications | AIAA

Apollo Guidance Computer (1967)

Documentation of the AGC that guided Apollo missions. 74KB ROM, 4KB RAM, real-time navigation. A masterpiece of early embedded systems engineering.

MIT Instrumentation Lab | NASA

Kessler & Cour-Palais (1978): Collision Frequency

Predicted cascading orbital debris collisions (Kessler Syndrome). Collisions create fragments that cause more collisions, potentially making orbits unusable.

Donald Kessler | NASA JSC

Edelbaum (1961): Low-Thrust Transfer

Optimal low-thrust orbit transfer theory. Foundation for electric propulsion trajectory design used in modern ion-engine missions.

Theodore Edelbaum | AIAA Journal
